Help for flood affected in Sindh
Cash assistance to 100 families in Tandoallahyar
“It is amazing that people from Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, though away from the troubled area, feel intimately the pain and suffering of affected communities”. A community leader at the cash assistance distribution by Kohatians Foundation
Kohatians Foundation distributed cash assistance to 100 families affected by floods in the village Bukeera Sharif in district Tando Allahyar of Sindh. A total of Rs 500,000 was distributed in the selected families of the village, each family receiving Rs 5000. Priority was given to women, disabled and disadvantaged of the village.
On behalf of the Kohatians Foundation, the activity was personally supervised by Dr Ahsaan Khan a senior staff member of Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, based in Karachi. Dr Ahsaan belongs to Waziristan and has lived most of his life in Karachi. The distribution of cash assistance was conducted in the presence the community leaders, opinion makers and local Sindhi media.
Flood affected in Sindh- Current Situation
In 2011 unlike the previous year heavy rains inundated the area of Sindh that is rich in high valued crops and fruits. Most of the cotton belt of the area was destroyed. The water still stands in the field and water logging is adding to the problems. The floods have taken a heavy toll in Sindh due to losses of crops, affecting the economic activities, livestock, shelter and increasing health issues. During the visit by the team on October 15 and 16 it was observed that a large swathe of land was still under water. The water logging in the area is adding to the problems. Access to the peripheral far-end villages is still restricted. The roads connecting the worst affected villages are washed away and inundated. The situation is even further complicated in areas where the local administration with their field functionaries/ workers are part of the affected population or communities hence their contribution for recovery and rehabilitation is compromised.
Cash Assistance Distribution
Reports Dr Ahsaan Khan - "It took us a three hours of travel through Hyderabad and Tandoallahyar by road from Karachi to reach the village Bukeera Sharif. The 100 families selected for the cash assistance of PKR 5000 for each family were organized by the local friends and associates. The community leaders were encouraged and engaged for the activity.
While the needs of the area were high, KF tried to target the worst affected and least assisted amongst the population of the village.
Moreover despite the cultural sensitivities women were directly given the cash assistance. Senior citizens and those physically challenged were given priority.
The activity was conducted in the presence the community leaders, opinion makers and local Sindhi media. Many of the participants enquired about the Kohatian Foundation as they were amazed by the fact that people from Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa, though away from the troubled area, feel intimately the pain and suffering of affected communities. The cash mode of assistance provided to the communities was also praised because it was given to the affected people with no regard to their political or religious affiliations and the whole exercise was conducted with fair degree of transparency."
Kohatians Foundation expresses gratitude to Dr Ahsaan and his friends for their voluntary support in this endeavor.

Inauguration KF Kachai Project

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

In a well attended ceremony, Masud Afridi bhaijan Deputy Inspector General, Kohat region and Justice (retd.) Syed Ibne Ali (former Chief Justice, Peshawar High Court) inaugurated the KF lead Kachai Protection wall (bandh) project on Saturday, 24th September on the project site in Kachai. KF requested Masud bhaijan for inauguration as a Kohatian, while Justice Syed Ibne Ali is an Associate Life Member of the KF. KF President, Ikram bhaijan was expected to join the event, however he had to change plans due to his travel for another engagement.
The ceremony was also attended by Dr Shad Ali Khattak bhaijan, a Kohatian who is the EDO Health in Kohat these days and Dr Affan, another kohatian based in Kohat and working with UNFPA. Saad Gillani, the relevant staff from ILO office in Islamabad also was present.
You would recall that this project has been developed by Kohatians Foundation  in collaboration with and on the demand of the local population. The project is funded by International Labor Organisation. Manzoor Khaliq has been very helpful in planning and design of the project and in getting it funded. The requirements of ILO for funding projects are many and we had to pass through various stages of discussions, community dialogue and scrutiny within ILO before the project was approved.
This project is based on ILO recommended labor intensive construction methodology in which reliance is on using man rather than machine thus promoting employment. This project when successfully implemented may serve as a model for other projects as ILO wants to generate employment in the country by promoting use of manpower in a country like Pakistan where manpower is readily available and where mechanization of construction processes may not have the same degree of benefits as in other countries where manpower is scarce and thus expensive.
In addition the project will restore a bandh which was constructed about 85 years back and which was destroyed in the 2010 floods. Due to destruction of the bandh, the water supply scheme to three villages with about 20,000 population was affected. The restoration of this scheme will thus benefit a population of 20,000 people through better availability of drinking water and water for irrigation and livestock.
I attach some photos of the ceremony.
I would like to thank Masood bhaijan, (and through him Shad Ali Khattak bhaijan)  for agreeing to be a part of this activity. My gratitude to Manzoor for his support and guidance throughout this long process. He was travelling to Italy on the day and therefore could not attend, otherwise he would have been present as well.

Project: Employment Recovery Through Rehabilitation of Agriculture

Attention: open in a new window. PDF

Continuing our efforts to evolve into a broad based organisation, we have recently reached an agreement with International Labor Organisation to enhance livelihoods of the population affected by the floods of 2010 in the Kachai area of district Kohat. The area has a population of about 20,000. During the floods of last year a protection 'bandh' (dam) was washed away due to which the sources of water was seriously affected. The fields and orchards irrigated by the reservoir dried out and many people of the area were forced to migrate. As we had done some work with ILO previously, we approached the ILO for funding of reconstruction of the reservoir. The ILO Programme Officer, Manzoor Khaliq provided useful support and we were able to have the project funded. This agreement in principle is the culmination of a long and strenuous process involving developing of the design, getting approval from the government, extensive dialogue with the local community, identifying local volunteers and engineers as well as continuos dialogue with ILO and numerous revisions of the design, cost estimates and the proposal based on feedback by ILO.
The proposed Project will re activate employment and enhance livelihoods of the flood-affected population through restoration and repair of water sources for agriculture. It will address the multiple objectives i.e., overcoming water related needs of the local community in Kachai area of district Kohat as well as providing short-term employment to local people in infrastructure rehabilitation.  The project aims at contribution towards improvements in the life of the population of the area through repair of the Dam/Bandh and the water channel thus restoring the irrigation system.
The activities will provide employment to the local population and also train them in construction work which would enable them getting gainful employment in other construction related activities.
This is a 3 month project with an estimated budget of approximately Rs. 2.6 million. Due to the financial limits with ILO, the local commuinty would be required to share some of the cost. The project may provide some adminstrative/management costs to the KF.
